Series - Hands

Project name: Hands

When did the project start? A project that is being developed in stages at different periods in life.

A little about the creative process -

The creative process does not happen only when I meet the material and begin to work physically. It begins even before that in my head, eyes, hands and heart. Sometimes it goes through a process of processing into an initial sketch containing a visual scribble as a painting or as text.

It is requested when my art and expression are essentially in the hands that create, which I will also give space to in the work. In some of the works, the choice is in my hands (most of them). There is a prior intention in this choice.

The mediums the project is made of - works in different techniques: some are line drawings in pencil, some are acrylic on canvas and some are works with iron wires.

The choice of medium/technique -

In each of the works, I tried to use a process that allowed me to immediately convey the idea and message, whether it is acrylic, whose drying process is fast and working in layers is convenient, pencil, iron wires that allow me a drawing process similar to a pencil but different in the result and appearance that gives an additional dimension beyond the flat page.

Research -

Hands that are actually the subtext of the ritual spoken loudly and clearly.

Hands as another language that accompanies the words that come out of our mouths emphasize and sharpen the text that comes out of our mouths or vice versa, betray what is not said and express exactly what the heart feels. Hands with a sharp and clear statement that come to put an exclamation mark for us to point out and emphasize, compared to those that are momentarily caught in our gaze and "reveal" what is in the heart, double meaning and hypocrisy compared to exposure and vulnerability.

Today, in the Corona era, when half of our faces are hidden by a mask, the person speaking to us is actually revealing mainly his eyes and hands, which are conducting the conversation.

In a conversation, most people usually listen to the words, meaning they mainly use their sense of hearing to hear what is being said. Only a few and sharp ones notice the expressions on their faces and hands. This is a combination of the sense of sight during a conversation, observation and deeper listening that is not always visible to the naked eye.

We are used to listening to verbal conversation and not always to the one that is expressed in allusion and sometimes called a "gut feeling" and that an unscientific measure and not cut into a clear word makes it difficult for us to know and judge what is being said (with the eyes and hands as another language).

Topic of the project -

A different conversation about hands, about a language that is important to pay attention to and see, even when it is accompanied by text and usually becomes a subtext of what is being said.

Description of the start of work on the project - This is a project that did not start today, you could say that its starting point is drawing exercises with the left hand of my palms and without looking at the page, in an attempt to release control and the desire to find and create something more Intuitive.

Source of inspiration for the project -

Observing my past works created a new observation and found that the hand drawings accompanied me in different periods, in a process that I am going through with myself, it was important for me to find my expression today and create a language and path from the works of that time to those of today.

The story that the work tells -

The works reveal different periods, a different perspective and a different search experience with the same element that repeats itself, which is the hands. The object is the same, while my time and place as a creator change within the long process.

The process, the subject and the method allow the viewer to hear the personal story within the work and what it evokes in them and to "hear" what in the silence of the language of the hands is the text that accompanies the silent language.

In the series there are two works that are presented differently in terms of the choice of frame cut - the hands that embrace (defend) and those that acknowledge.

The hands here are torn from the body, unlike the rest of the series. The rest of the hands in the series are connected to an imaginary body.

Because the hands that embrace and also protect the body with a hug and the hands that thank are indeed mine but they come out of the body in order to thank not only external factors, but also in order to make them accessible to myself and to thank myself for certain things and the hands that embrace must come out of the body in order to not only send a hug to those around them but also to myself. In both of these works the hands do not only describe a situation that is being observed but are also presented to me and embraced in acceptance and gratitude for the ability to create.
